Diabetic Eye Exams
Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in North America. Diabetes not only impacts your health, it can impact your vision. Patients with diabetes are at an increased risk for vision-threatening eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema which can result in bleeding or scarring of the retina, hindering vision and potentially causing blindness if untreated. Patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes should see an optometrist at least once a year so that any changes to the eyes can be detected and treated before they impact your vision. Your Optometrist may also recommend coming in more frequently, depending on your individual eye health needs.
OHIP covers patients with diabetes for one full eye examination per year.
